Ralph Waldo Emerson is the founder of American Gnosticism; intentionally trying to create an American philosophy, and moving away from European religion. But he found his ideas to be on a par with those of the German philosopher, Frieerick Nietzsche, and they certainly admired each other. Of course, Nietzsche was disavowed by European academia; bringing hm into the American counter-European paradigm.
